Antibiotic Resistance Trends Among Ocular Pathogens
A new study in JAMA Ophthalmology sought to investigate antibiotic resistance profiles and trends in ocular pathogens.
In this cross-sectional study of longitudinal data from the Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring in Ocular Microorganisms (ARMOR) study, cultures from patients with ocular infections from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018 were analyzed. After examining >6000 ocular isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Haemophilus influenzae, researchers found that methicillin resistance and multidrug resistance were dominant among staphylococc. In the 10-year study period, antibiotic resistance profiles were unchanged for the most part.
The authors concluded that this data may help ophthalmologist in picking the most appropriate antibiotic for patients with ocular infections.
